Bathed in the luminous clarity of a Maine summer, this watercolor pairs a sunlit still life with a wide Atlantic vista. In the foreground a wooden table holds a terracotta geranium in full bloom, a lobster on a plate, and a closed book, "Red by John Logan, its scarlet cover echoing the flower plant. Beyond, choppy blue-and-green waves carry scattered boats toward a curving, tree-lined shoreline; and seagulls wheel overhead. Mounted behind the table is a framed reproduction of Winslow Homer’s The Gulf Stream (c.1899): its tense scene of a sailor and circling shark contrasts the domestic calm, introducing a subtle note of danger. Warm foreground hues balance cool sea tones; loose washes evoke salt air and light, while finer detail anchors the intimate meal against the vast, ambivalent sea.
